Summer Style Experiments Worth Trying

June 16, 2026

One of the reasons I love summer style is that it feels less serious. Layers disappear, routines loosen up and getting dressed becomes a little more playful. It’s also the season when many women feel most willing to try something different.

The best part? Experimenting with your style doesn’t require a complete wardrobe overhaul. In fact, some of the biggest style discoveries come from making small shifts and paying attention to how they make you feel.

If you’ve been feeling stuck in a style rut, summer is the perfect time to try something new.

Try a Color You Normally Avoid

Most of us have a color comfort zone. We gravitate toward the same shades because they’re familiar and easy to wear.

Summer is a great time to challenge that pattern. If your closet is filled with black, white, gray, and navy, consider introducing a color that feels a little unexpected. It doesn’t need to be bright pink or neon green. A soft butter yellow, sky blue, olive green or coral can be enough to breathe new life into your wardrobe.

Sometimes a single color can make you see your closet differently.

Revisit the Dress

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone say, “I’m just not a dress person.”

Maybe that’s true. But sometimes it simply means you haven’t found the right dress yet.

Summer offers endless opportunities to experiment with dresses because they’re practical, comfortable and easy to style. If you usually wear fitted dresses, try something flowy. Or if you’ve always gravitated toward maxi lengths, try a midi. If you stick to solids, consider a subtle print.

You may discover that the issue was never dresses. It was the specific style of dress you were choosing.

Experiment with a New Silhouette

(Outfit Details: Hat, Romper – similar, Sneakers)

One of the easiest ways to update your style is to change the shape of what you’re wearing.

If you’ve spent years reaching for skinny jeans, try a straight-leg or wide-leg option. Or if every top in your closet is fitted, consider a relaxed button-down or breezy linen shirt. If you typically wear structured pieces, experiment with something softer.

A new silhouette often feels unfamiliar at first but that’s usually because we’re seeing ourselves in a different way. Give yourself time to adjust before deciding whether something works.

Add One New Accessory

(Outfit Details: Top, Shorts, Hat)

You don’t need a dozen new accessories. One great piece can completely change how your outfits feel.

A structured tote, classic watch, woven bag, statement earring or modern sandal can instantly update basics you already own. Accessories are often the easiest place to experiment because they’re less intimidating than trying an entirely new wardrobe.

Think of them as a low-risk way to test a new direction.

Choose the Slightly Bolder Option

(Outfit Details: Top, Skirt, Clutch – similar)

This is probably my favorite style experiment of all.

When you’re deciding between two pieces, there’s often one that feels safe and one that feels just a little more exciting. Not over the top. Not wildly outside your comfort zone. Just different enough to make you pause.

The dress with the interesting neckline. The brighter color. The statement earring. The wider pant leg.

More often than not, that’s the piece I encourage clients to try.

Not because being bold is always better but because style confidence is built by trusting yourself. Sometimes the outfit you can’t stop thinking about is the one worth wearing.

The Real Goal

The goal of experimenting isn’t to become someone else. It’s to learn more about yourself.

Every woman I’ve worked with who has great personal style arrived there through trial and error. She tried things. Some worked. Some didn’t. Along the way, she learned what felt authentic and what didn’t.

That’s why summer is such a great season for style growth. There’s less pressure, more freedom and more opportunities to play.

So try the color. Wear the dress. Test the new silhouette. Add the accessory.

You don’t need to reinvent yourself this summer.

You just need to be willing to discover something new.
