If your closet has been feeling off lately, like nothing is quite working the way it used to, it’s probably not because you need more clothes. And it’s not that you don’t have “good pieces.” It’s usually something much simpler: you have closet gaps.
Pieces that are outdated in fit or proportion, items that no longer reflect how you actually live or basics that just aren’t pulling their weight anymore. And the tricky part? You often have something in that category, it’s just not the right version. That’s what makes getting dressed feel harder than it should.
I’m going to explain how we are not overhauling everything, we’re getting specific about what to look for, what to update and how to spot the gaps that are quietly holding your closet back.
And more specifically, the closet gaps are pieces that are either:
- outdated in fit or proportion
- slightly off for your current life
- or just not working the way they used to
This is your go-to list to walk through your closet and decide: is this still working or is this where I need an upgrade?
Everyday Tees
These are your foundation and often the most outdated without realizing it.
Look at:
- Fabric (too thin, stretched, see-through?)
- Fit (too tight vs. intentionally relaxed?)
- Neckline (overly scooped or losing shape?)
What feels current today:
- Slightly boxy, structured tees
- Mid-weight cotton that holds shape
- Clean crewneck lines
A good tee should carry an outfit – not just fill space.

Layering Pieces
This is where most closets quietly fall apart.
Look at:
- Button-down shirts
- Cardigans
- Denim jackets
- Lightweight knits
Outdated tends to be:
- Very fitted or tight
- Shrunken proportions
- Stiff and restrictive
What feels current today:
- Relaxed button-downs with movement
- Soft, drapey cardigans
- Denim jackets with room to layer
These should make outfits feel easier, not harder.
Elevated Basics (Denim + Trousers)

If these are off, everything feels off.
Look at:
- Fits that no longer feel balanced (especially overly tight silhouettes)
- Waistlines that don’t support your current shape
- Fabric that feels stiff or dated
What feels current today:
- Straight leg or subtle wide leg denim
- Soft structure trousers
- Mid-to-high rise that actually works for your body
Think: modern but still wearable for real life.
Accessories
The fastest way to update your closet without completely starting over.
Look at:
- Belts
- Jewelry
- Sunglasses
Outdated often looks like:
- Pieces that disappear (too delicate) or overwhelm
- Belts that feel off in proportion
What feels current today:
- Simple, intentional jewelry
- Sleek belts with minimal hardware
- Structured sunglasses
Accessories should finish the outfit.
Seasonal Shoes
Shoes can instantly date a look.
Look at:
- Pairs you’re holding onto out of habit
- Styles tied to a past trend
What feels current today:
- Clean, minimal sneakers
- Simple flats (almond or slightly square toe)
- Easy, minimal sandals
Less detail, more refinement.
Outfit Completers (Bags)
This is one of the biggest shifts right now.
Look at:
- Everyday tote
- Crossbody
Outdated tends to be:
- Overly structured
- Heavy hardware
- Logo-heavy
What feels current today:
- Woven totes
- Soft, slouchy shoulder bags
- Texture-forward materials
Your bag should feel like part of the outfit, not an afterthought.

The Reality
Most closets don’t need a full overhaul.
They need:
- better versions
- updated proportions
- and a few intentional replacements
Want to Actually Do This Step-by-Step?
I put this into a simple, printable checklist you can walk through in one afternoon: Closet Edit Checklist!
Inside, I guide you through:
- how to pull everything out and reset your space
- the exact questions to ask each piece (“would I buy this again today?”)
- how to identify your real gaps (not random shopping)
- and how to rebuild your closet with intention
It’s the process I use with clients and it makes this so much clearer.
The Closet Shift
At the end of the day, this isn’t about having more, it’s about having what actually works. When your closet is filled with pieces that fit well, feel current, and support your real life, getting dressed becomes something you don’t have to overthink. It becomes easy.
The goal isn’t perfection or a perfectly curated capsule, it’s alignment. And once you start filling the right gaps (instead of randomly adding more), you’ll notice everything else in your closet starts to work better together. That’s when your wardrobe finally feels like it’s supporting who you’re becoming.
