Elevate Your Look With Patterns And Prints

April 29, 2024

If you read my last blog post about turning forty, you will remember patterns and prints used to be non-existent in my wardrobe until the last few years. It wasn’t that I was aganist the idea, I just hadn’t really experimented with them in a way that felt seamless for my own personal style. As I began incorporating more subtle patterns and prints into my closet, I realized how versatile and (fun!) it made my wardrobe.

So, I’m sharing three tips on how you can easily elevate your look with patterns and prints in a way that’s approachable and not scary!

1. Elevates Basic Pieces

Prints and patterns have the magical ability to elevate even the most basic of clothing pieces. A simple white blouse or a pair of black trousers instantly becomes more dynamic when paired with a printed blazer or patterned scarf. By incorporating prints strategically (and subtly), you can breathe new life into your wardrobe staples, making them feel fresh and exciting with minimal effort. Who doesn’t love that?

In this example, you will see how I took this printed skirt and paired it with a simple knit white tank top. If it’s a colder day, you can also layer with a jean jacket, like I did here! Most of us have some version of a basic white tank or tee shirt which makes this a very easy way to tone down the look but also keeps visual interest in the skirt.

2. Adds Visual Interest

Incorporating prints and patterns into your outfits is an effective way to add visual interest and dimension. Whether you’re mixing and matching different prints or using a single statement piece to anchor your look, patterns draw the eye and create focal points within your outfit.

I absolutely love this full matching top and skirt set I purchased from LOFT. I took the skirt with me on Spring Break to Puerto Rico and it was the first thing I grabbed to wear out of my suitcase. It can easily be mistaken for a dress but I love that it’s two pieces, which makes it so fun!

3. Allows For Versatility

Prints and patterns offer endless opportunities for experimentation and creativity. From experimenting with different color combinations to playing with scale and texture, there are countless ways to incorporate prints into your outfits. Whether you’re wearing a head-to-toe printed look or subtly showcasing patterns, the versatility of prints allows you to constantly reinvent your style and keep things fresh.

One great thing about purchasing a patterned set, is that you get multiple outfits out of two pieces. I love pairing the skirt on it’s own with a white tank or tee shirt and I also love the top with white or light blue denim, which is perfect for spring and summer.

Here is another versatile look from my gal Wendy of Willow & Wren Photography, that I had to share! Confession – I saw this striped linen blazer from LOFT and immediately texted her and said, “YOU NEED THIS.” After a little convincing, she agreed. And dang, she looks great in it as it’s the perfect blend of casual and polished. This is a blazer she can wear with her favorite light denim jeans and also with her favorite cream trousers.

Incorporating prints and patterns into your style isn’t just about following trends or making a fashion statement—it’s about embracing who you are and who you are becoming. Whether you’re drawn to bold, graphic prints or delicate, whimsical patterns, don’t be afraid to elevate your look with prints and patterns when it comes to your personal style.

After all, fashion is meant to be fun, expressive and above all, uniquely you!
