Spring Family Photo Dresses – Mom Edition

February 13, 2024

Hi friends! It’s been a bit and it feels SO good to be back from winter break. Here in Minneapolis, we have ZERO snow (so wild!) which has me thinking about warm weather AND Spring family photo dresses.

If you don’t have Spring family photos planned yet, the dresses below are great options you can wear for Easter or bring on your upcoming Spring break vacation. I’m all about thinking ahead and getting the most out of your wardrobe.

Spring Dress Trends

You might be wondering what are the Spring trends this season? Let’s break it down so you can find Spring family photo dresses that work for your style.

Expect to see bold and eye-catching prints and patterns, from florals to graphic designs.

  • Graphic florals
  • Vertical Stripes
  • Feminine styles: bows and lace
  • Dress styles: bodycon, slip dresses, maxi dresses, and wrap dresses
  • Color trends: pistachio green, cherry red, orange/corals, white, pale blue, chocolate brown (yep!)

While trends are fun, I recommend shopping your closet first to see what you already have. You might be able to give “new life” to a dress you own by layering it with a new jacket, shoe or accessory!

Start with YOU

Starting with your dress ensures two things. First, you’ll be wearing something YOU love. This is so important because feeling good in what you have on, translates in the photos.

Secondly, you will be able to coordinate everyone’s outfits with more ease because you aren’t trying to find the perfect color or item at the end to go with your families outfits, which can be SO stressful if you can’t find what you are looking for.

With that, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite Spring dresses below. Let me know which ones are your favorite!

Family Photo Styling Advice

Color Coordination: It’s important to coordinate rather than match. I recommend a color palette with 2-4 complementary colors and distributing them throughout each family member’s outfit.

Seasonal Considerations: Since February still has a wintery feel, I recommend incorporating seasonal elements, such as adding a cozy sweater, scarf, or jacket. Alternatively, for warmer climates, I suggest lightweight layers or breathable fabrics.

Comfort is Key: Comfort for everyone is SO important, especially for children, to ensure they feel relaxed and happy during the photoshoot. Clothes that fit well and allow for movement are great choices!

Avoid Busy Patterns: While pattern is “in” this year, I recommend avoiding clothing with really busy patterns or logos that can be distracting in photos. Solid colors or subtle patterns tend to work best.

Accessorize Thoughtfully: Accessories aid in enhancing the outfits and adding visual interest. I recommend choosing accessories like hats, belts, or statement jewelry that complement the overall look without overpowering it. Focus on one accessory rather than over-doing it. And if you are unsure take one item off!

Location and Theme: If you have already chosen a location or theme for the photoshoot, be sure your wardrobe complements these choices. For example, if the shoot is in a natural setting, I suggest earthy tones and casual attire.

Timeless vs. Trendy: I encourage families to strike a balance between timeless pieces that will still look good in years to come while incorporating current trends in a subtle way.

Trial Run: I always recommend trying on the outfits about 3-4 weeks ahead of the actual photoshoot to ensure everything looks cohesive and is photograph-ready. This also allows enough time to make any returns or exchanges.

If after all this you are considering family phtoos this Spring and you are not even sure where to start or the idea of family photos has you overwhelmed, let’s get in touch so you and your family show up wardrobe ready! You can also read more about my styling packages here.

No matter the season, finding dresses that fit your personal style and make you feel confident and comfortable is key.

Happy Shopping!
