New Beginnings

June 16, 2021

We moved! Yep, we decided to take a chance on a new adventure. You can chalk it up to one of those crazy, whirlwind, “what are we thinking” moments and it never felt more right! Let me catch you up on how this all unfolded. My husband and I had been planning our next move for quite sometime. Building a home seemed like the next right decision for our family. After a long search to find the perfect lot to build, we ended up defeated as all the lots we looked at were not the right fit for one reason or another.

After thinking we may stay in our current home, everything changed when my husband sent me a link for an existing home located in a farm setting. It was a historic 1910 Victorian farm house. My first thought was heck no, thinking about all the work we would need to do but on a whim, we decided to go see it in person. We took one step inside the front door and after about 30 seconds of looking around, we knew this was it. The house was exactly what we were looking for!

As we packed up our things and officially moved in, I started noticing all the details, thinking about how we could make this house our own while still keeping all the charm and character. We were both overwhelmed to say the least! I was looking at all the peeling paint on the front porch, the wood that needs replacing, a new exterior paint job, new floors… the list goes on and on and it got me thinking about this idea of embracing your potential – embracing what’s possible.

Life has a way of surprising you when you least expect it. Sometimes it’s what you were hoping for and other times it’s not. And, sometimes what we are aiming for can be the exact opposite of what we actually need. This was the case for us. It was not the path we were on, but looking at it now, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’ve never been one to shy away from a challenge but this house was going to take work, a lot of work. It was the exact opposite of what we initially wanted. We wanted a new house, top to bottom – no extra work, no long days grinding to fix, repair and replace things. What we initially wanted, was the “easier” road to the end.

As I’m writing this, there is a new home being built right up the street and I jog by it almost every week. I’ve been able to watch all the construction and new updates go in and while I have thoughts from time to time about just how great that home looks, I’m reminded of what’s right in front of me. We have an old house – full of possibilities and potential. It’s a good reminder that choosing the “harder” thing can be the most rewarding. Greatness takes time and we are up for the challenge! I hope you will follow along with me in our remodel process as we tackle all the projects while also embracing the journey along the way.
