Family Photos & How to Get it Right

May 12, 2021

Hi guys! Thanks for stopping by. I wanted to talk about family photos. Now, if I’m being honest, while this is one of my favorite things we do each year, it is NOT easy and has its challenges from getting prepared to the photoshoot itself. Knowing this, I wanted to offer some tips and tricks that have helped our family get it right in hopes it can help you too!

Tip 1: Decide on the location

When you are in the planning process, something that has helped us initially is deciding where we will shoot. This is important as it sets the stage for your vision and end result. I often think of places that feel like “home” or a place that holds special meaning within that year. Sometimes your location can also be coupled with your family vacation as well.

Tip 2: Timing

After you have established your location, consider your lead time. I always give myself two or three months. I can’t stress this enough! I know it sounds crazy but I promise it will make such a difference in the end. Remember – if you book early, you will likely get the day and month you prefer rather than having to work around the photographer’s schedule.

If you are looking for a photographer and/or you are local to Minneapolis, I highly recommend Sweet Light Studios. I’ve partnered with them to offer you a special discount code. For new customer bookings – use code: BLOG10 for 10% off! I have been working with them for six years and absolutely love their work. Sweet Light Studios has done our engagement photos, wedding photos, infant photos and now our family photos and I couldn’t be happier with the results! Check out their website to learn more and book your session!

Tip 3: Outfits – Start with YOU

After you have thought through the location, decided on timing and booked your session, it’s time to start thinking about what everyone is going to wear. This can be one of the most stressful parts – let’s be honest! I have learned this the hard way at times. My biggest tip is start with YOU! It’s easy to put everyone else first. I have done that and ended up in tears the day of the photoshoot because my husband and son looked great and my outfit didn’t fit, didn’t look quite right or it wasn’t my first choice. So, the moral of the story is start with your outfit first! Find something you love and feel great in and then coordinate everyone else around you.

I hope these tips help you and your family as you think ahead to your photos this year!
