Wardrobe Dos & Don’ts For Professional Headshots

January 6, 2025

Your personal brand starts with the first impression, and often, that begins with your headshot. Whether you’re preparing for a professional photography session or updating your LinkedIn profile, the right wardrobe choices can elevate your image. As a wardrobe stylist, I’ve seen how even small adjustments can make a big impact. Here are the top five dos and don’ts for professional headshots to guide your outfit selections – plus practical tips to fix the “don’ts.”

1. Do: Wear Colors That Complement Your Skin Tone

Why it works: Colors that harmonize with your natural complexion make your skin look radiant and bring out your best features.

Don’t: Avoid colors that wash you out or clash with your undertones. Bright whites, yellows, or bright neons can be tricky to photograph and may not flatter everyone.

Fix: If you’re unsure of your best colors, opt for jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, or ruby red. Neutrals like navy or black are also safe bets. For a pop of color, try layering with a colored blazer that complements your outfit.

2. Do: Choose Tailored, Well-Fitting Clothing

Why it works: Properly fitting clothes convey professionalism and confidence. Ill-fitting outfits can distract from your face and create an unflattering silhouette.

Don’t: Avoid wearing clothing that’s too tight, too loose, or unstructured. Baggy clothing can make you appear less polished, while tight clothing might highlight areas you’d prefer to downplay.

Fix: Try on your outfits ahead of time and assess their fit from all angles. If something feels off, consider alterations or adding a belt to define your waistline. A well-fitted blazer is a wardrobe hero for headshots.

3. Do: Stick to Timeless, Classic Styles

Why it works: Timeless pieces ensure your headshots remain relevant for years to come. Simple, classic styles keep the focus on you rather than your outfit.

Don’t: Avoid overly trendy clothing, bold prints, or busy patterns that can distract from your face or date your photos.

Fix: Opt for solid colors or subtle textures like pinstripes or small checks. If you love prints, keep them minimal and pair them with a solid piece for balance. For example, a patterned blouse under a neutral blazer works beautifully.

4. Do: Coordinate Accessories Thoughtfully

Why it works: The right accessories enhance your look without overpowering your headshots. Simple, elegant pieces complement your outfit and add a touch of personality.

Don’t: Avoid oversized or noisy accessories that draw attention away from your face. Chunky necklaces, large earrings, or jangly bracelets can be distracting in photos.

Fix: Choose minimal, cohesive pieces like stud earrings, a delicate pendant necklace, or a simple watch. Keep jewelry in the same metal tone for a polished and coordinated look.

5. Do: Prepare and Test Your Outfit in Advance

Why it works: Testing ensures you feel confident and eliminates surprises on the day of the shoot. Some fabrics wrinkle easily, and others may look different under bright studio lights.

Don’t: Avoid last-minute outfit choices that might be ill-suited for photography. Don’t assume an outfit you love in person will translate perfectly to photos.

Fix: Try on your entire outfit, including shoes and accessories, and take test photos in natural and artificial lighting. Pay attention to how the colors and fabrics behave on camera.

Your wardrobe is a powerful tool for showcasing your personal brand. By following these dos and avoiding common don’ts, you can ensure your headshots exude confidence, professionalism, and authenticity. Remember, the key is preparation and thoughtful styling—small details make a big difference!
